INTERVIEWS

Prepare for your church interview

Prepare to explain your experience and learn what the church expects from its next employee.

Know what you are walking into

Review the church’s own website and the position description. Note what you understand about its beliefs, congregation, and work, along with anything you need explained. Public information is a starting point for questions, not a complete picture of life on staff.

Confirm the meeting time, location or video link, and who will take part. Ask whether you need to bring materials or prepare a presentation. If travel or a substantial assignment is involved, clarify the arrangements before making commitments.

Bring examples you can discuss

Think of a few occasions that show how you work: completing a responsibility, helping someone learn, handling a setback, or responding to disagreement. Be ready to explain your part, the choices you made, and what you would carry into a future role.

You do not need a polished success story for every question. A clear account of a difficulty and what you learned can be more useful than a rehearsed answer. Avoid sharing details that would identify someone who trusted you with a private concern.

Leave room for your own questions

Use the conversation to discover whether the work and expectations are clear enough for you to make a decision. If an answer is broad, ask what it would mean during an ordinary working week.

  • Which responsibilities need the most attention when someone starts?
  • Who would I work with most often?
  • How are changes to priorities agreed upon?
  • What hours and recurring commitments should I expect?
  • What compensation and benefits are attached to the position?
  • What happens next, and when should I expect an update?
