Choose the details that matter for this opening
Begin with the church’s posting beside you. What will the person in this role spend time doing? Your résumé should make it easy to find experience that connects with those responsibilities. An office position may call for scheduling and recordkeeping, while a ministry position may place more emphasis on teaching or supporting volunteers.
You do not need a different life story for every application. Keep a complete record of your experience, then select and arrange the most relevant details for each opening. Include your name, reliable contact information, and enough employment history to make your background understandable.
Describe your contribution in plain language
For each relevant role, explain the work you handled and the people or activities you supported. A title alone may mean little outside the organization where you held it. Describe the scale of your responsibility when it helps, but do not add numbers or outcomes you cannot verify.
Experience gained in a business, school, nonprofit, or volunteer role can be useful to a church. Explain the connection instead of assuming the reader will make it. Label volunteer experience clearly, and take care not to present a team’s achievement as something you accomplished alone.
Finish with a practical check
Read the application directions once more before sending anything. Supply the documents requested, use a format the church accepts, and make sure links open correctly. If a testimony or statement of faith is requested separately, give it its own space rather than crowding the résumé.
- Check names, dates, spelling, and contact details.
- Explain unfamiliar abbreviations and internal ministry titles.
- Keep private information about congregants and colleagues out of examples.
- Ask someone to read the résumé without an explanation from you.
- Save a copy of the posting and the application you submitted.
